What is DBT Skills Group?

A DBT skills group is a group-based skills training program aiming to teach individuals a variety of skills to improve their ability to manage their emotions, to cultivate effective relationship skills, and to pursue a life worth living.

DBT is an evidence-based intervention used to support individuals with emotion regulation difficulties and various psychological conditions, including borderline personality disorder (BPD), depression, anxiety, and substance use conditions.

This skills group runs for 15 weekly sessions, with each session lasting 1.5 hours. The program is divided into three main modules: Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. You can choose to join the full program or sign up for the module that best fits your current needs.

Who is suitable to join DBT Skills Group?

Adults (age 18-55) dealing with difficulties with regulating emotions, impulsive behaviors, depressive symptoms, anxiety, and/or self-harm behaviors. Participants need to be proficient in English (we have Mandarin skills group), and are not currently experiencing active psychotic or manic symptoms, or a developmental disorder.

Participants experiencing active suicidal or self-harm thoughts and behaviors are required to have an existing individual treatment provider (e.g., psychologist, psychiatrist, counsellor, or case manager) whom they are seeing regularly (minimally once per month), who is agreeable to manage any risk-related issues.

Past participants Feedback

"The DBT Skills Group was an amazing experience that helped me grow and feel better. We learned about mindfulness, dealing with difficult situations, controlling emotions, and getting along with others. We also had the opportunity to practice these skills in different activities. Overall, the DBT Skills Group is a great place to learn and grow. It gave me tools to improve my mental health and relationships. I highly recommend it".
"Joining a DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) group skills program has been a transformative experience for me. While it initially seemed like a commitment with weekly sessions and homework, I quickly realized the value it brought to my life. Learning these skills on my own through self-help books or individual therapy would not have been as impactful as participating in a group setting. The shared experiences and support from others made me realize that I was not alone in my struggles."
"Feeling supported and understood, I found the motivation to practice the skills even when they felt challenging. The interactive nature of the sessions, which included roleplays and practicing the skills together, enhanced the learning process and made it more engaging. However, the most significant aspect was the bond I formed with other participants. Witnessing their growth and positive transformation throughout the module not only gave me a sense of camaraderie but also inspired me to become better and stronger myself."
“The DBT Skills Group taught me the skills to help me cope better with distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness. Although it was my first time joining the program, Ms Cloyee Wong who facilitated the group did a great job at making the sessions enjoyable and easy to understand and follow.”
"I was introduced to this group during a session with my therapist, and though I initially knew little about it, I was convinced it could help me gain better control over my emotions, especially after experiencing a heartbreak and struggling with self-deprecating thoughts. Throughout the sessions, I learned a range of valuable skills to cope with self-destructive behaviors and transform my perspective on self-worth, leading to a healthier approach to life."
"One significant aspect was giving mindfulness practice a chance, which surprisingly changed how I perceive the present moment and allowed me to be fully aware of my actions during times of distress. As a result, my depression, stress, and anxiety significantly reduced."
"What made this experience even more insightful was learning together with other participants and gaining exposure to different perspectives. This allowed us to exercise empathy and understand each individual's struggles better. DBT stands out from any other therapy I've undergone, offering a structured life skills class that instilled genuine hope in me, that I can truly lead a fulfilling life. This program totally rewired my brain to handle stuff in a healthier way, so my issues don't spiral out of control anymore. People in my life have even noticed a positive change in me – I'm definitely living a happier life now!"
"Ms. Cloyee, our super patient and understanding therapist, makes sure everyone gets the concepts. If you need a deeper explanation, she's got your back. Additionally, they provide handouts for revising and practicing the skills, making the program truly worthwhile. If you join, I'm certain you'll experience a life transformation that is beyond what you might expect."
The group was led by Miss Cloyee, who taught us practical skills for managing emotions and improving relationships. Miss Cloyee was really knowledgeable and supportive, and she was always there to help us individually.
